Project Jaguara: a new chapter for Litostroj in Brazil

In June 2026, Litostroj signed a contract with WEG for the supply of key hydraulic turbine components and engineering services for the expansion of the Jaguara Hydroelectric Power Plant in Brazil. The power plant is operated by ENGIE, which has contracted WEG to provide the EPC scope for the expansion, including new turbine-generator units, the associated civil works, and auxiliary equipment.

Located on the Rio Grande River on the border between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, the Jaguara Hydroelectric Power Plant currently has an installed capacity of 424 MW. The expansion project includes the installation of two new generating units, each with a capacity of 116 MW, adding a total of 232 MW to the plant's generation capacity. The new units are expected to enter commercial operation in 2030.

Under the contract, Litostroj will be responsible for the complete hydraulic design of the Francis turbines, as well as the design and manufacture of the runners and guide vanes. The company will also provide technical support during project execution.

The project represents a significant engineering challenge due to the relatively low-head operating conditions for Francis turbine technology. The turbines will feature exceptionally large runners exceeding 6 metres in diameter and weighing more than 120 tonnes, demonstrating Litostroj Power's expertise in delivering advanced hydropower solutions for demanding applications.

The Jaguara expansion supports the growth of renewable energy generation and the efficient use of existing hydropower infrastructure, reinforcing the strategic role of hydropower in the energy transition.

This project marks an important milestone in the cooperation between WEG and Litostroj and opens a new chapter in the partnership, combining the strengths, technological expertise, and market presence of both companies to deliver sustainable energy solutions for the future.
