Ružín: Modernizing a 30 MW reversible Francis turbine

Litostroj Engineering has successfully completed the rehabilitation of a 30 MW reversible Francis turbine at the Ružín Hydropower Plant in Slovakia. The project combined hydraulic and mechanical engineering, model testing, manufacturing of a new runner and rehabilitation of key turbine components, bringing together expertise across the entire project lifecycle.

A complete turbine rehabilitation

The Ružín project focused on the modernization of an existing reversible Francis turbine, combining a new hydraulic solution with the rehabilitation of key existing components. With an output of 30 MW and a runner diameter of 4,970 mm, the unit represents a substantial piece of hydropower equipment requiring precise engineering and manufacturing.

From the initial hydraulic and mechanical design through physical model testing, manufacturing and rehabilitation, Litostroj Engineering managed a comprehensive scope covering the critical stages of the modernization.

Engineering and manufacturing in one process

A key part of the project was the development and manufacture of a completely new runner. The work was complemented by the rehabilitation of selected turbine components, allowing modernized hydraulic performance to be combined with the existing plant infrastructure.

This approach reflects Litostroj's experience in modernization projects, where extending the lifetime of existing equipment requires a combination of advanced engineering, manufacturing expertise and detailed knowledge of the original technology.

Successfully returned to operation

With the rehabilitation completed, the modernized turbine has been handed over to Slovenské elektrárne, marking the successful completion of another modernization project in Slovakia.

The Ružín project demonstrates how targeted turbine modernization can combine new hydraulic technology with the rehabilitation of existing equipment to support reliable long-term operation.
